Community Service Community service is an important component of the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. It aims to encourage responsible, caring participation in the local environment and in the wider world. Our emphasis is on being reflective of our roles as citizens in our local and global community; instilling a sense of personal responsibility within ourselves and in others and; developing the skills and attitudes needed to make a positive contribution to society. Students in grades 5-8 are expected to complete specific hours of community service by the end of the school year.
To keep track of their hours throughout the year, students receive a community and service handbook. Community and Service hours can be collected for completing any service volunteered by a student that benefits the school or a community group. The activity can be completed within the school or in the larger community. Community and service logs and reflections must be turned in to the home room teacher at the end of every marking period.
There will be opportunities for students to serve the school community and the various community groups through fundraisers, writing letters to servicemen & sick children, Can Drives for the Community Soup Kitchen, put on musical performances, plant flowers, work on the school garden,Library, clean up litter in the school park, serve meals at the Community Soup Kitchen, and read books to students in the lower grades. 8th graders can also volunteer in K/R’s athletic department during quarterly events and field days. Students also have the opportunity to sign up with Mrs. Knowles to do morning announcements. Students who are members of the School's Student Council can count the work they do to support the school as part of their community service hours. Parents and Guardians are also encouraged to arrange for students to do community service outside of the school community.
